Is management an art or a science - 1538 Words

Many a times this question has been raised and various people have given an insight on what their beliefs are on whether management is an art or a science. To be able to determine where management falls in these two terms, it is important to know what they each mean and give support as to why it can either be an art or a science. Below shall be a discussion in detail on whether management is an art or a science but to begin with it is important to know what management is and what it entails. Management according to Henri Fayol a renowned scholar said management ‘can be defined as a set of activities, including planning, organising, leading and controlling directed at an organisations resources with the aim of achieving organisational†¦show more content†¦Management involves judgement and skills. The art of management can be refined with continuous practice of management theories and principles. The manager as an artist seeks to develop and improve on these skills on a daily basis. The personal possessions of a manager is what makes up the art in management. This is an individual who is equipped with the right knowledge and education and has the right skills and expertise in management. Also, to show that management is an art is because management is practical and practical results are expected for example in the issue of making profit. The art in management seeks to achieve this in the most effective and efficient way possible. No prescribed books guidelines or principles can assist you in this. Managers make decisions on this based on current situations around them. The above are some of the reasons why management is said to be an art and to follow will be the reasons why management can be said to be a science, beginning with definition of science and where it falls under management. Science can be defined as any skill or technique that reflects a precise application of facts or principles. It can also be defined as an organised or systematized body of knowledge pertaining to a particular field of enquiry.
