While it was a military defeat for the country and the government at large, it meant something more for those who experienced it first hand in the battlefield. The war meant erosion and sudden loss of innocence, it meant deep and ugly scars on hearts and minds that even years of therapy couldn't heal and it also meant an apparent suspension of reality. For those who saw the people dying in this senseless conflict and experienced their pain and suffering, life was never the same after coming back from the war. They remained in a state of disillusionment, forever wondering why this war took place in the first This confusion, persistent bombardment of questions, a barrage of unresolved issues took their toll on the veterans and some completely lost their grip on reality. For them reality was no longer what it was other people. They had seen something horrible, which was definitely so terrible that they must have questioned themselves if it really happened or what they just imagining the whole conflict. But this is not because they didn't remember the truth but simply because the ugly nature of war urged their minds to seek escape. Their internal alarm system made them turn away from reality and develop numerous different versions of it just to remain sane and retain their ability to function as normal human being. But it is not very often that we are given true account of war veterans and their experiences on the battlefield. Most of the accounts that reach us are fabricated stories with some grain of truth. The real and close analysis of veterans' experiences during the Vietnam War shows that none of them actually remember clearly what happened on the battlefield. Definition and Examples of Spelling Reform in English The term spelling reform refers to any organized effort to simplify the system of English orthography. Over the years, organizations such as the English Spelling Society have encouraged efforts to reform or modernize the conventions of English spelling, generally without success. Examples and Observations [Noah] Webster proposed the removal of all silent letters and regularization of certain other common sounds. So, give would be giv, built would be bilt, speak would be speek, and key would be kee. Why should spelling not be open to reform in the same way as currency, weights and measures and other institutions of society? The main argument for reform is self-evidently valid: that the removal of irregularities in our present writing system would make for greater and e asier literacy. . . .A wide range of spelling reform schemes have competed, with little tangible success, for public approval. The most extreme proposal was undoubtedly the Shaw alphabet, subsidized by the estate of George Bernard Shaw . . .. This was based on the strict alphabetic principle of one consistent symbol per phoneme. The new alphabet could have been contrived by augmenting the 26 letters of the Roman alphabet with extra letters or accents, but Shaw took the extreme option of commissioning a completely new set of 40 letter shapes in which, to a limited extent, phonetically similar sounds had a similar form. . . . Reducing Violence in Schools :: School Violence Essays

On January 18, 1993, Scott Pennington, a seventeen year-old student from Kentucky, shot and killed his East Carter High School teacher Deanna McDavid and janitor Marvin Hicks, and then held his twenty-two classmates at gunpoint for about fifteen minutes. On September 15, 1995, Daniel Watson, eighteen, was charged with one count of kidnapping, two counts of unlawful possession of a weapon on school property, and fifteen counts of first degree endangerment after holding a fellow student at gunpoint at his high school. Watson had been in a fight before school, and then went home and returned with two handguns. In November of 1996, Drew Golden, 11, and Mitchell Johnson, 13, opened fire on their fellow students and teachers in Jonesboro, Arkansas, killing four students and an English teacher. Is this what should be happening in America’s schools? Should students have to be more concerned with their safety, rather than obtaining a good education? Incidences similar to the ones just described occur every year in school systems across the country. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, fifty-seven percent of public elementary and secondary school principals reported that one or more incidents of crime/violence occurred in their schools during the 1996-1997 school year. The center also reported that ten percent of all public schools experienced one or more serious violent crimes (defined as murder, rape, or other type of sexual battery, suicide, physical attack or fight with a weapon, or robbery) during the 1996-1997 school year. Physical attacks or fights led the list of reported crimes in public schools, with about 190,000 reported incidences in 1996-1997. Schools should be places where the objective is to give students the skills and knowledge to help them with their future; they should not be havens for violent acts. Something obviously needs to be done to decrease and hopefully one day eliminate violence in America’s school systems. There have been numerous proposals made to help the problem, but there still has not been a significant improvement in the problem nationwide. Several recent reports-one by the American Psychological Association and another by the National Education Association-show a dramatic increase in the incidence of school violence. It is going to take a team effort by the government, communities and the schools to help reduce violence in America’s school systems. The government has attempted to address the issue of school violence. In 1994, President Bill Clinton signed the Gun-Free School Act, mandating a one-year expulsion for students who bring weapons to school.

Hospitals are now using unlicensed assistive personnel who help provide direct as well as indirect care for patients under the supervision of nurses. This change will demand that nurses have a sharper understanding of delegation.Teaching future nursing students how to delegate different responsibilities using their communication and critical thinking skills should be a significant subject in schools. Schools should focus on students’ active learning techniques to enhance this skill. Some of these techniques can be didactic content, case studies, and clinical placement. These learning techniques will consequently assist the nursing students realize the importance of delegation thus preparing them more comprehen sively for their future career. When students use these methods, they increase their competence on the subject of delegation.This article allows students understand the importance of delegation in the health care system today. A positive point of view from this article is how the author gives different examples of why is vital to teach delegation to nursing students. As a nursing student, I was able to experience how essential delegation is at a clinical setting by using the learning activity called clinical placement. Clinical placement allowed me to additionally understand how I can use critical thinking to delegate different tasks to other team members.There was one negative aspect to this article in my opinion. The author failed to provide actual examples of how delegation can be use in care facilities. I believe there are many things that students can learn from this article. Emerson Self Reliance

Ralph Waldo Emerson's works â€Å"Self-Reliance† and Nature esteem transcendentalism as a romantic, individualistic philosophy of life in hopes of establishing contemporary concepts in society which reject traditional institutions and customs. Emerson’s thoughts are generally based on inward reflection, in which the capabilities of one’s soul and intuition are fundamental. He believes that a rejuvenated sense of personal inspiration can overpower the dogmatic constructs society imposes on its members.Emerson stresses the potential for genius and creativity in all people through the depth of philosophic interest in nature and in oneself, allowing people to find self-truth or their purpose. He further expounds upon this concept of the pursuit of self-realization by describing the process of gaining insight through opening oneself to the powers of nature in solitude and closing oneself to the influence of society in isolation. Isolation reflects Emerson’s sta tement of individualism as its emphasis is placed on the mental strength of a person over traditional systems of thought.This philosophy esteems individuals above all: society, religion, and other institutions and systems of thought. The dogmatisms imposed on human beings are part of a course one must deviate from in order to achieve individual freedom of thought and expression. A person must use society as a standard from which they must rise above by disregarding its norms. Emerson repeatedly calls on individuals to value their own thoughts, opinions, and experiences above those presented to them by others. Each individual is a unique expression of creativity and will, capable of contributing different ideas and reforms to society.Mankind’s divinity also plays a prominent role in the methods of isolation. All people, according to Emerson, have divine powers within. Success and achievement are derived from people themselves, not bestowed by another superior being. He uses th e example of â€Å"prayer as a means to effect a private end, is theft and meanness† (Self-Reliance 545). This direct link between divinity and the individual provides assurance that the individual will, when correctly exercised, can never produce evil.Individual will, in Emerson's philosophy, is not something to be rejected or hidden, as done so by many who are unable to see past society’s dictums, but rather a force to be asserted and upheld for the more advanced progress of man. In this context however, an individual who fails to be self-reliant, who does not intend to act upon his or her own thoughts and ideas, is out of step with its purpose. Such a person, in Emerson's view, cannot be productive, fulfilled, and therefore happy, as they are not living for anything real.These people are only temporarily pacified by ideals that have already been established, innovations that have already been discovered, and abilities that have already been exhausted. On the other h and, a person who is self-reliant can be assured that he or she is carrying out a divine purpose of life, as no one before them could have had the exact same ideas, strengths, or mental environment to work with. Those who flout the rules and conventions of society and religion do, however, suffer disapproval as a result.But, Emerson points out, those men who were earlier condemned are now considered some of the greatest thinkers of all time: Galileo, Socrates, Copernicus, and countless others. Amending the immediate thought process of one’s world exposes the counter ideas of those who do not want change, but is ultimately beneficial when they are given time to adjust and open their minds to new ideas. The first innate reaction of man is to reject that which is different and may pose dangers to the familiar way of life.This â€Å"terror that scares us from self-trust† (Self-Reliance 537) is the beginning of the emergence of universal conformity which, in turn, eclipses innovation and personal growth. However, the more people open themselves to their personal judgment and intuition, the more trust they will have for each other as a mutual respect for ideas will develop. People will be able to relate to each other through their processes of thought, ensuring acknowledgment amongst all for the effort and uniqueness society will experience through individual contributions.Self-reliance is not a merely a matter of averting tradition but, just as importantly, a matter of believing and doing what one is uniquely suited to believe and do. Emerson expects the self-reliant to substitute originality for imitation in every sphere of life. Referencing architecture, Emerson explains that originality will yield a product that is superior to one made by imitation: If the American artist will study with hope and love the precise thing to be done by him, considering the climate, the soil, the length of the day, the wants of the people †¦ e will create a house in which all these will find themselves fitted, and taste and sentiment will be satisfied also (Self-Reliance 547). A commitment to live according to one's own ideas about every matter will certainly result in benefits far greater than those which are given by adhering to former ideals of society as people will be able to almost customize the different aspects of their lives. Isolating oneself from the mental influences of others provides people a tool to aid their focus on what they really desire from themselves and their lives.Though solitude arrives at the same product as isolation, abilities and confidence in oneself, it requires a separate course of action. In solitude, one must physically disconnect from civilization and open oneself to the influences of nature and the powers of the unquantifiable. In Nature, Emerson displays the overwhelming sense of unity, harmony, and the blending of man's identity with the divine essence of nature, as the entire â€Å"universe is composed of Nature and the Soul† (Nature 493). By being in nature, one comes upon the feeling of losing his human point of view.An omniscient one is then created through the feeling that man exists as part of nature-â€Å"I am nothing. I see all† (Nature 494). Nature’s constructs, such as the sublime, help people to not only appreciate their positions in the universe, but realize the vast unknown and the consequent pettiness of everyday temporal problems. By ridding oneself of the perceived dualism between people and nature, one becomes part of all creation and is able to access the power nature exerts. Solitude also includes the awareness of time and its genuine importance that nature conveys to man.Emerson counsels the self-reliant to keep their focus on the present. â€Å"Man postpones or remembers,† (Self-Reliance 541) he explains. â€Å"He does not live in the present, but with reverted eye laments the past, or, heedless of the riches that surround him, stan ds on tiptoe to foresee the future† (Self-Reliance 541). One who lingers in the past or worries about the future wastes one’s life in regret while another who looks to the future misses today's opportunities and pleasures. It is Emerson’s confidence in the present that leads him to establish that consistency is foolish.That a certain belief or course of action was correct, useful, or best in the past does not guarantee that it remains so in the present. Conversely, to leave behind a belief or a way of doing things does not mean that it was not useful at the time or that one was wrong to have pursued it, but it no longer applies. He refers to a rose’s ability to just grow, no matter what may happen in the future and what had happened in the past. The rose simply does what it is supposed to do, and does not let its goal out of sight by becoming distracted with mere possibilities or previous occurrences whose effects cannot be altered.The ability to live in t he moment ensures that an individual uses the potential of every moment to its fullest, ultimately creating a genuine purpose for said individual to work towards and a higher probability of fulfillment in life. This individual goal, however, comes with its own approach. Emerson acknowledges the fact that through isolation, people gear towards finding something they that they either want to achieve or experience as they are able to focus their thoughts on their own potential. Reaching a goal, however, has no preset or guideline; people must go about doing so in their own way.To demonstrate the effectiveness of an apparently inconsistent course through life, Emerson uses a sailing journey as a metaphor: â€Å"The voyage of the best ship is a zigzag line of a hundred tacks† (Self-Reliance 538). The knowledge that one is following the true path to the right destination, despite apparent inconsistencies, gives one confidence to ignore the taunts of others who deride one for changi ng course. By complying with both isolation and solitude, intuition judgment and appreciation become the powers by which people liberate themselves from the constructs and opinions of others and focus on personal growth.Emerson’s perception of solitude suggests that one opens themselves to the exterior influences of nature to gain insight whereas his theory of isolation contends that people use civilization as a standard from which they must deviate. If the individual is able to progress, society will do so automatically. Therefore people must trust their own characters and way of life. Isolation also combats the notion that all people are obliged to acquiesce to societal conformities that are ultimately detrimental to both individual and communal well-being.The â€Å"norm† is not always right, society regresses instead of progresses as people refuse to change what has been, in fear of being different. Solitude results in personal acceptance to where they are in life a s people open themselves to the sublime or powers they cannot compete with, imposing a sense of humility and therefore a realistic outlook to life and one’s own potential. Consequently, nature along with the powers of the human mind embodies true happiness and fulfillment.

I empathize with the parents because it has to be very traumatizing and heart wrenching to know that your child will always have this â€Å"special need† for the rest of their life. Many of the mothers in the video had many financial struggles as a result of autism. Although it is very evident that each mother truly loved and appreciate their child you can see that it is very tough for them to cope and adapt to their lifestyle that is revolved around caring for a child struggling with autism. Most of the mothers have experienced rude and bewildering looks and questions from other parents who do not understand the dynamics of autism, they also shared a common bond with the other mothers because the mothers of autistic children can understand and sympathize with the demands of the autistic child. Many of the parents were exhausted, drained, tired, helpless, heartbroken, and alone. Working outside the home is virtually impossible because their autistic children needs constant supervision and care. This in turn leads to the fathers of the children to be the sole supporter which puts more strains on the relationship/marriage. I felt that the children were very lucky to have mothers who cared so much and was more than willing to go the extra mile and to continually love and support them. I felt sorry for the mothers because they really looked sad but brave. I read an article that many disabled children are at an increased risk of being abused and mistreated because of their disabilities and the strains it puts on the families involved. But these children were very well loved and taken care of. One mother said her entire day is dealing with therapists and specialists and many doctor appointments. These children were a bit rambunctious but somewhat mild mannered. It is evident that they do have many â€Å"meltdowns† that are not understood by strangers when they are in public places. I could not imagine having to deal with a autistic child simply because it would put so much stress and pressure on me. I applaud the mothers for being so jovial with their children. One mother pointed out the fact that she may never get to share a dance with her son at his wedding because of his autism, he may never get the chance or opportunity to get married. Many autistic children won’t live normal lives and have the â€Å"normal† and traditional lifestyle that other children will have and grow up to have. One mother was still struggling with that fact and it has been terribly hard to get her mid wrapped around that concept. I really felt a pain for her because I know many women grow up wanting to have children and then when they finally do and the child has a disability it is hard to get rid of the picture perfect lifestyle and child they imagined themselves having. One mother talked about how she was always scared when the phone rung that it would be her daughter’s school saying that her autistic child hit, bit or acted out violently. One mother talked about the many roof leaks she has had for years but can simply not afford to repair it because it was too expensive and the money she had would go to caring for her child with autism. All the mothers dealt with the same struggles and tribulations but through it they still have lots of moments of happiness with their child. They are very inspirational to watch them talk and discuss their feelings and details of their child’s and their lives. If I had an child who suffered from autism it would of course be hard but my parental skills would kick in and I would be doing the same thing as the mother in this documentary. Just because your child has a â€Å"special need† or disability doesn’t means that kid does not want and deserves love. ALL children need and want love. I commend these brave mothers.

How are you doing on your New Year’s Resolutions Every year I not only post my New Year’s â€Å"Ressaylutions† in January, but also report on my progress in August (well, last year I did my mid-year check-in in September). Why do I do this? Because like most humans, my memory is short. It’s so easy to lose track of the promises I made eight months ago. And I don’t want to find myself in January 2016 in the same place I was a year before. Do you remember your 2015 New Year’s goals? Did you write them down? If so, this is a good time to assess your progress and recommit so you can create new, forward-moving goals for 2016! The Essay Expert’s 2015 â€Å"Ressaylutions† and Current Status: Increase college essay / personal statement portion of my business to 25% of business. †¨This goal continues to elude me. I have been getting more referrals from resume writers for this type of work, following a presentation I gave last year at the National Resume Writers’ Association conference. And I appeared on Channel 3 TV the morning of July 31 for 3 minutes (an eternity for TV news) talking about college essay topics. I look forward to September through November which are the busiest admissions consulting months of the year! Roll out a new â€Å"responsive† (mobile-friendly) website.†¨ Made huge progress on this one! TheEssayExpert.com has launched in its new form and is mobile-friendly! I still have work to do to make the site the way I want it, but I feel like I fulfilled on this promise. Implement Infusionsoft.†¨This has largely happened. My e-lists have been transferred to Infusionsoft and clients now receive automated messages that ensure we will not lose track of them or their projects! The launch had a number of glitches and we’re still working out the kinks, but I definitely came through on this one- with MAJOR help from my assistant Jeanne and from Jeremy at WhoKnowsAGuy Media! Serve 250 clients.†¨ Total clients this year is 72, largely due to changes in the number of clients coming to me through my e-book. I am looking at my lead generation strategies and will be working furiously on my website’s SEO in order to generate more leads. Publish a print version of How to Write a KILLER LinkedIn Profile.†¨ This was a huge project, and it’s close to done! The book is formatted and I have a proof which I have now reviewed cover to cover. Once my multitude of edits are complete, we will go to print! I expect the book to help out with Ressaylution #4, increasing my client base at universities and in the Amazon market. Implement a robust referral program. This project has been on hold while I focus on website, Infusionsoft, and print book. I might bump it to 2016! In the meantime, however, people who refer paying clients to The Essay Expert can expect a gift from us! Create more internal systems/guidelines. I have made progress in this area, adding and clarifying items in my agreements with my writers and also revamping some of the terms of service for clients. This is an ongoing project and will never end! I am likely not going to fulfill all my Ressaylutions for 2015, but I’m pretty close on most of them! In previous years, I have written down my goals for the year; however, I never thought about conducting a midyear check to see how I was progressing. This year, I decided to do things slightly different with my goals. I got together with a group of friends and we had a Vision Board party. I found the vision board works well for me because I am visual person. I just need to focus on SMART goals. I am looking forward to sharing what I accomplished this year.
